<p><span style="font-family:TimesNewRomanPSMT;font-size:small;">Saya tertarik pada fenomena-fenomena budaya masa. Karya-karya saya banyak mengeksplorasi budaya konsumsi yang menjadi sistem baru masyarakat kontemporer dewasa ini. Akhir-akhir ini saya banyak melakukan riset terhadap idiom budaya massa, seperti tiket kereta api, beha bekas dan lain-lain. Idiom itu membantu dalam mengkomunikasikan pesan melalui karya.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:TimesNewRomanPSMT;font-size:small;">Ketertarikan saya pada seni serat oleh karena media ini terbuka untuk dieksplorasi dan memiliki ruang eksperimen tanpa batas. Salah satunya  adalah teknik celup ikat, bagi saya teknik ini sangat menarik karena teknik ini melahirkan berbagai hasil tak terduga. Saya menerapkan temuan ini untuk membuat motif dan bentuk pada karya saya.Karya-karya yang diciptakan berupaya mengajak audiens untuk melihat berbagai budaya konsumsi sebagai fenomena yang tak terelak dan menarik untuk dikaji lebih jauh. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Lucida Grande;font-size:small;">I am interested to the phenomenon of mass culture. My artworks often explore the culture of consumerism which becomes the new system within the current contemporary society. Recently I did many researches to the idiom of mass culture, such as train tickets, used bras, etc. The idiom helps in communicating messages through my artworks.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Lucida Grande;font-size:small;">My interest to fiber art is because this medium is open for explorations and it has unlimited space for experiments. One of them is the tie-dye technique, which is very interesting for me because the technique gives unpredictable results. I apply this discovery in creating motifs and shapes in my works. The artworks I made are trying to take the audience to see further into the culture of consumerism as an inevitable phenomenon and how interesting it is to be discussed further.</span></p>

Karya-karya saya melibatkan berbagai tanda-tanda  nirsadar ini dalam pengalaman hidup saya sendiri. Saya menuliskan kalimat-kalimat  yang kadang saya sendiri tidak tahu artinya atau tidak lazim digunakan  ketika berkomunikasi dalam keseharian, hanya keluar begitu saja saat  sendirian. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:TimesNewRomanPSMT;font-size:small;">Sejumlah kata-kata ini saya  tuangkan dalam dalam karya. Seni serat bagi saya merupakan suatu medium  yang unik, artistik dan mempesona untuk dieksplorasi menjadi karya.  Ia bisa dilipat, dijahit, dibordir, diwarna ataupun dipilin sesuai kehendak  hati. Dalam berkarya saya mengunakan tehnik sulam, <em>kniting</em> dan  bordir, atau penggabungan dari teknik tersebut. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:TimesNewRomanPSMT;font-size:small;">Ketaksadaran bagi saya, juga  sebuah mitos yang menyimpan berbagai tanda yang asing, absurd dan tak  dikenal. Melalui karya-karya ini, saya Berharap karya-karya ini bisa  mengajak audiens untuk melihat apa yang tidak mungkin dalam bahasa. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Lucida Grande;font-size:small;">The subconscious world is a source  rich with inspirations. My artworks elaborates various subconscious  symbols within my own personal life experiences. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Lucida Grande;font-size:small;">I wrote sentences that  sometimes I don&#8217;t know the meanings or it&#8217;s not commonly used in daily  communication, yet they appear whenever I&#8217;m alone.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Lucida Grande;font-size:small;">A number of these words I made  into artworks. Fiber art for me is a unique medium, artistic and enchanting  to be explored into artworks. It could be folded, sewed, embroidered,  colored, or coiled according to the heart&#8217;s whim. In creating artworks  I used the techniques of embroideries and knitting, or a mixture of  both techniques.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family:TimesNewRomanPSMT;font-size:small;">Spiritualisme dalam budaya  tradisi menjadi inspirasi yang banyak memengaruhi cara saya berkarya.  Khususnya bagaimana spiritualisme ini bertautan dengan dengan budaya  modern. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:TimesNewRomanPSMT;font-size:small;">Teknik yang saya gunakan umumnya menggunakan teknik pilin, lukisan,  bordir, sulam dan jahit. Teknik ini saya pilih karena memungkinkan saya  untuk menghasilkan berbagai bentuk tak terduga. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:TimesNewRomanPSMT;font-size:small;">Garis dan warna pada  karya saya mengekspresikan ambiguitas antara apa yang profan dan sakral  . Sebagai seniman, saya berharap karya saya bisa memberi kesadaran akan  nilai-nilai spiritual yang terkandung dalam berbagai eksistensi budaya  tradisi. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Lucida Grande;font-size:small;">Spiritualism in the traditional  culture is an inspiration which influences me a lot when creating artworks.  Specifically in how spiritualism is interrelated with the modern culture. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Lucida Grande;font-size:small;">The technique I use usually is coiling, painting, embroidery, and sewing.  I choose the techniques because they enable me to create unpredictable  forms.  Lines and colors in my artworks express the ambiguity between  the profane and the sacred. As an artist, my hope is my artworks could  bring an awareness of the spiritual values embodied within the various  existence of traditional cultures.</span></p>

<p>Pengertian serat (fiber) dalam Kamus Besar Indonesia adalah sel atau jaringan serupa benang atau pita panjang berasal dari hewan atau tumbuhan (ulat, batang pisang, daun annas, kulit kayu, dsb) digunakan untuk membuat kertas, tekstil dan sikat. Dari pengertian ini kita bisa memahami substansi media dari cabang seni serat ini adalah pada benang dari bahan sintetis, fauna dan alam. Ada yang difungsikan untuk kepentingan produk massal, ada pula yang difungsikan untuk sarana ekspresi individual.</p>
<p>Keberadaan seni serat di Indonesia kian menunjukkan perkembangan yang dinamis. Media ini kerap dimanfaatkan oleh penekun seni serat untuk tujuan fungsional, namun penggalian seni serat untuk tujuan ekspresi juga menarik untuk kita ikuti.</p>
<p>Caroline Rika (32), Abdul Syukur (30), Rifqi Sukma (29) adalah perupa alumnus FSR ISI, jurusan Kriya Tekstil yang menaruh perhatian serius pada media ini. Masing-masing memiliki sikap estetis dan cara mengeksplorasi yang berbeda-beda. Serat di tangan Rika menjadi sejumlah “jumputan” (teknik celup ikat), bentuk berbagai bulatan yang lucu. Abdul Syukur membuat sejumlah pilinan unik menjadi sejumlah objek trimatra. Rifqi membordir, memayet kain menjadi sejumlah bidang bertekstur. Ketiganya mendekati kain dengan cara yang eksploratif. Rifqi menggunakan bahan kain poliester dan katun. Abdul menggunakan Natol untuk memoles warna. Kemudian Rika juga menggunakan Napthol dan Indigosol dengan menggunakan kain katun. Ia menerapkan motif truntum dalam menggubah figurasi burung, yang dalam hal ini menggunakan teknik batik cap. Ia juga menyematkan teknik border mesin untuk menyematkan label dalam karya-karyanya.</p>
<p>Bentuk visual karya mereka berbeda dengan lazimnya seni serat yang orang lihat pada seni batik dan tapestri misalnya. Dalam terma masa kini, karya-karya mereka memperlihatkan bentuk kontemporer. Artinya, cara mereka membentuk tidak ingin terikat pada pakem gaya tradisional. Penjelahan bentuk ini membuka bentuk pengucapan personal. Membentuk stilisasi dan gaya tersendiri. Di sini saya kira kita bisa mengapresiasi bahwa karya-karya mereka ini membuka peluang untuk melakukan berbagai penjelahan bentuk baru. Benang dalam hal ini menjadi karya objek yang tersusun dari berbagai macam unsur material.</p>
<p>Bidang seni serat ini jelas tidak meninggalkan aspek craftsmanship, ketelitian dalam menentukan dan memilih bahan. Ketiganya berkutat pada bagaimana unsur benang bisa sedapat mungkin melahirkan bahasa artistik. Juga nampak bahwa unsur benang mereka artikan pula sebagai sebuah teks yang tengah menenun dan membentuk dirinya menjadi sebuah style.</p>
<p>Inilah pameran yang menampilkan eksplorasi atas media sekaligus sebagai tanda bahwa seni serat sendiri dalam eksplorasi mereka menjadi berbagai bentuk yang segar dan berbicara. Bentuk yang lahir dari proses menjumput, memilin, membordir dan memayet tidak hanya berarti benang, namun juga teks.</p>
<p>Curatorial Excerpt:</p>
<p>The definition of fiber in the Bahasa Indonesia Master Dictionary is a cell or tissue in the shape of a thread or a long cord, which comes from animals or plants (caterpillar, banana tree, annas leaves, tree barks, etc.) and used to produce paper, textile, and brush. From this definition we can understand that the substance of the fiber art field as medium is the thread, from synthetic material, fauna, or natural. Some are used for the benefit of mass-productions, some are used for a mean of individual expressions.</p>
<p>The existence of fiber art in Indonesia is showing its dynamic developments. The medium is often used by fiber artists for functional means, but the exploration in fiber arts for expression is also interesting to be observed.</p>
<p>Caroline Rika (32), Abdul Syukur Syam (30) and Rifqi Sukma (29) are graduates from FSR ISI, majoring Textile Crafts, and they put great concerns on the medium. Each has different aesthetic inclinations and exploration techniques. Fiber in Rika’s hands becomes ‘jumputan’ (a tie-dye technique), in assorted cute rounded forms. Abdul Syukur created a number of unique knots into three-dimensional objects. Rifqi embroidered and sequined fabrics into textured surfaces.</p>
<p>The three approaches fabric with explorative manners. Rifqi uses polyester and cotton. Abdul uses synthetic textile colorants to give colors. Rika also uses Naphtol and Indigosol to give colors. She applies ‘truntum’ motif in forming the bird patterns, which in this case is using batik-print technique. She also uses embroideries in attaching labels on her works.</p>
<p>Their artworks’ visual forms are different from the usual fiber art that people commonly see in the batik art or tapestry. In modern terms, their artworks are demonstrating contemporary forms. It means, the way they work is not restricted by the traditional style and rules. These form explorations bring forth the shape of personal expressions, constructing unique stylizations and styles. In this case, I think, we could appreciate their artworks as the window of opportunity in doing many new form explorations. Thread in this case becoming an object work, assembled from various types of materials.</p>
<p>This is the exhibition that displays explorations of medium, and at the same time as a sign that fiber art itself, in their explorations, acquires fresh and expressive forms. The forms—born from the process of ‘jumputan’, knotting, embroidery, and sequin—are not merely a bunch of threads, but also texts.</p>
